Week 1 NFL Picks

It feels like this off-season has dragged on longer than previous ones because I’ve been overly impatient waiting for the NFL season to start. I’m especially excited to do this segment since I always like doing Pick ‘Em. I made my Saints/Vikings pick on my other blog and I ended up being terribly wrong. It happens. I’m a little more confident with the rest of these picks, though. Let’s get it started.

Cleveland Browns vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Two awful teams last year and this year doesn’t look any better for either. Jake Delhomme hasn’t looked bad for the Browns so  far, but that could change in an instant. That said, I’m going to give the edge to Cleveland since they have a potential game breaker in Jerrome Harrison on their side. The Bucs 1st round DT Gerald McCoy will be put to a test here.

Pick: Browns

Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills

Honestly don’t see how Miami loses this one unless something goes completely wrong. Bills only have 3 healthy linebackers…and they run a 3-4 defense. This could get ugly.

Pick: Dolphins

Cincinnati Bengals at New England Patriots

There’s a lot of people on the Bengals bandwagon with their new corps of receivers but I honestly haven’t been impressed with them at all in the pre-season. The Patriots don’t exactly have good corners at all so they could get their chance to do some damage here. If the Patriots passing game can light it up, then I think they should be able to get the win. Leon Hall will probably be covering Randy Moss, so I’m expecting Wes Welker, Rob Gronikowski and Julian Edelmen to get a lot of looks and the Patroits take it by a touchdown.

Pick: Patriots

Denver Broncos vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars wont have to worry about their QB situation in this game since Denver’s front 7 looks pretty depleted and they have one of the best running backs in the league on their team. Maurice Jones-Drew fantasy owners are going to go insane this week unless Denver surprises me. I think the Jags should take this one.

Pick: Jaguars

Carolina Panthers at New York Giants

Already made my case on why the Panthers can win this game, and I think they can do it. If the Giants have any problems stopping the run, then Carolina can take this easily. Yes, I’m being a homer but it’s week 1. I’m allowed to be one.

Pick: Panthers

Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears

Mike Martz’s pass-happy offense is in a good week-1 situation since they’re going against the Lions, a team with a consistently bad secondary. Jay Cutler is going to start his second year on the Bears on the right foot in this game.

Pick: Bears

Atlanta Falcons at Pittsburgh Steelers

I have no doubts that a healthy Steelers defense can hold Michael Turner to at least less than 100 yards. However, I have a lot of doubts in Dennis Dixon and whether or not he can lead Pittsburgh to victory against a tough opponent. However, Atlanta’s defense has always been their weak point so it could be a good situation for him. Still, I’m going to give Atlanta the edge with Matt Ryan and Roddie White having big games.

Pick: Falcons

Oakland Raiders at Tennessee Titans

I don’t care how many people say the Raiders are improved. As of right now, they still have a terrible run defense and the Titans have Chris Johnson. There is no reason why the Titans can’t win this game.

Pick: Titans

Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans

Outside of making the playoffs, beating the Colts has always been a huge problem for the Texans. A lot are saying that this is the year that they overcome both. It’s definitely going to be a high scoring game and the upper hand will go to who runs the ball better and which defense comes up big. Going to say the Colts have the advantage with that.

Pick:  Colts

Arizona Cardinals vs St. Louis Rams

Both teams going through a transition process but the Rams are still awful, so I think this is an easy win for the Cards.

Pick: Cardinals

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks

Seahawks can make this interesting but overall, I think the Niners will win this one without too many problems. Seattle’s coming in with a new offensive line and the 49ers have one of the best defenses in the league. It’s going to be hard for the Seahawks to do a lot on offense.

Pick: 49ers

Green Bay Packers vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles defense doesn’t look good coming into this year and the Packers have the best offense in the NFC. I’m interested to see how Kevin Kolb does but the Packers defense was good for the most part last season so I don’t think he will be much of a factor.

Pick: Packers

Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Redskins

I’m buying into the notion that the Redskins will be improved in 2010 but the Cowboys are better than them in almost every category. Washington still doesn’t have a running game, too. Clinton Portis and Larry Johnson didn’t look good at all in the preseason and that will set them back more than anything. That and LaRon Landry sucks and Romo can pick apart this secondary with ease.

Pick: Cowboys

Baltimore Ravens vs. New York Jets

Darrelle Revis is back and even some of the newcomers on the Jets secondary looked impressive this preseason, so the Jets will be in better shape then a lot of people think. Still, keep in mind that he’s missed all of pre-season and the Ravens have 4 very capable receivers they can turn to. Not to mention they can go to Ray Rice out of the backfield. Ravens secondary might be weak but so is the Jets passing game so I think Baltimore wins in a close one.

Pick: Ravens

San Diego Chargers vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Awful pass defense against one of the best QBs in the game right now.. yeah I think San Diego has this. The Chiefs 1st round pick Eric Berry is going to have his hands full that’s for sure. Even without Vincent Jackson the Chargers should be able to light up the Chiefs.

Pick: Chargers
