Orioles sweep Jays

After losing their first 13 meetings with the Toronto Blue Jays, the Orioles took all three games in their final series of the season. They also improve to a record of 26-15 under new skipper Buck Showalter. Why I’m writing about this series is because they played some of their best baseball in quite awhile during these three games.

Monday:  Orioles 4, Jays 3

Orioles got yet another walk-off win with an RBI single from Luke Scott. Rick Vandenhurk did a fine job filling in for Brian Matusz. Posted a line of 5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K. Very good for a spot start and the rest of the bullpen did a pretty good job, too. Koji Uehara and Mike Gonzalez both held the fort down in extra innings to keep the score even. Gonzalez struck out three of the four batters he faced.

Brandon Snyder recorded his first hit, which was an RBI single. Wasn’t pretty but it’s a good milestone for someone that should have some great years in Baltimore. Adam Jones had a great game at the plate too (2-3 RBI, BB).

Tuesday: Orioles 11, Jays 3

Offense! It does exist! Hell of a game all around from the O’s. Every single Oriole player that started recorded a hit. Adam Jones had a monster home run and Nick Markakis recorded his 10th too. If only he could show that power more often. Robert Andino also hit a bases clearing double. I don’t know much about Josh Roenicke but his confidence has to be at a new low after that.

Jake Arrieta also had another great start. It’s probably his last one before being shut down but at least he’s going out on a good note. 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K’s.

Wednesday: Orioles 4, Jays 1

Brad Bergesen pitched his third complete game only giving up 7 H, 1 R , 3 K, 0 BB. Bergesen doesn’t dazzle anyone with his stuff but he’s effective at getting quick outs and that earns you a spot in this rotation. I really hope he carries this into next year.

Offense also showed up again with everyone but Adam Jones getting a hit. The 2-8 with RISP has to change but still an effective win considering the pitching was great. They also did a good job of eventually getting to Kyle Drabeck (who was making his 1st career start) and being patient at the plate (ended the night with 3 walks and 5 K’s).

So, it’s nice to see this team playing some good baseball again. They may be well out of the race but it’s nice to actually look forward to watching the Orioles again. The bad news; that #1 isn’t going to happen. Oh well.
