Caps-Stars preview

Like the Blues, the Stars are a team the Caps don’t get to see much. The last time Washington saw them, it was March of last season and Dallas won in a shootout with backed on a valiant effort from goaltender Marty Turco. This season, Turco is with Chicago and now former Atlanta Thrasher Kari Lehtonen is backstopping the team. However, we will not see him tonight as the Stars will be going with Backup Andrew Raycroft instead. Raycroft has only appeared in 3 game this year but he is 2-1-0 with a wonderful save percentage of .941. For the Caps, it will be Michal Neuvirth getting the start after a well deserved break.

The Stars are sitting at the top of the Pacific division in the West and are a surprise to many this year. They feature a decent powerplay and a mediocre penalty kill but are 5th in the league when it comes to scoring at even strength so the Caps better be ready for that. Most of their scoring comes from their “big 3” of Brad Richards, Loui Eriksson and James Neal.

Coach Boudreau seems to be going with the same lines as yesterday with DJ King staying in the lineup on the 4th line. Tom Poti sustained another injury and will be scratched which means Scott Hannan will make his Washington Capitals debut tonight and be paired with John Erskine. Aside from that, it makes sense for Boudreau to stick with what worked last night.

Who To Watch

– Scott Hannan. Since it is his debut as a Capital and all…

– Nicklas Grossman and Stephan Robidas. I’m assuming these two are going to be on the ice to matchup with the first line so expect to see a lot of them.

– Alex Ovechkin. Well, I don’t think I need to tell you to watch him but he’s been goalless in his last 9 games but has a ton of shots and assists. I have to think this is the game he finally adds another goal to his stat sheet.

– Jaime Benn. He was one of the league’s more underrated rookies last year scoring 22 goals and he has 6 so far this season. Watch out for him on the second line with Brendan Morrow and Mike Ribeiro.

I think that’s all I got. Second games of back-to-backs haven’t gone too well for us this season but let’s hope this one is different. Both teams are on 4 game win streaks and one of them has to end tonight.
