Caps-Flyers Post-game thoughts

Going to keep things brief tonight since I’m not in the mood to write a full fledged recap on tonight’s game. I’ll just say that if we want to avoid another playoff disappointment, then the team’s star players are going to start stepping it sooner or later. Alex Ovechkin’s goal was a nice start but seeing him just stand around while the Flyers are all over the net wasn’t a good sign. Nor was Nicklas Backstrom continuing to look almost irrelevant (his assists are nice, though) or Mike Green making too many mistakes in his own zone. It’s probably what’s frustrating me the most about the team lately more than anything. That and their ability to only play 20 minutes of hockey per night which is becoming a common trend in the past few games. That’s also pissing me off. Glad we came away with a point tonight but ask anyone who watched that game and they’ll tell you they didn’t deserve it, which would be right.

Thoughts/Observatoins

– Boudreau is starting to have “Craig MacTavish Syndrome” with how often he’s juggling the lines. Game started off with Ovechkin, Laich and Johansson as a line, that turned into Ovechkin, Backstrom, Laich and then Ovechkin, Backstrom, Chimera and I’m pretty sure that I saw Matt Hendricks with Johansson and Knuble, too. That or I was just seeing things because Boudreau was changing the lines every 5 seconds. It honestly looked like Boudreau was just picking names at random and putting them on a line together and see if it worked or not, and if the lines didn’t produce immediately, he changed them again. We need Alex Semin to come back even if he was slumping for a good month. I have a feeling that getting him back can at least spark the offense a little.

– Speaking of which, remember when the Caps defense was keeping them down for the last couple of years? It’s topsy-turvy this season as the offense is ore of a problem than the defense. The Caps spent too much time pinned in their own zone and couldn’t sustain any pressure at all for the first two periods. 12 shots through 2 periods isn’t going to get the job done and when Backstrom and Ovechkin only have 2 shots a piece, that’s not a good sign.

– One penalty tonight between both teams. That a sign of the refs letting the players play (which they were) and the Caps not doing a good enough job in drawing penalties, which they weren’t.

– Michal Neuvirth was yanked after one period and he stopped 7/8 shots. The more I watch that goal he let in, the more inexcusable it is. Alzner made a bad pinch and Hendricks overskated on a puck in the neutral zone but Neuvirth has to know better than to not go out of the net like that. He gift-wrapped that goal for Carter and those goals will kill you on the road.

– I don’t even know if I can consider tonight’s effort 20 minutes or 40 seconds when the two goals were scored. Funny what crashing the net can do.

– I should probably have some perspective on tonight’s game because we were facing one of the better fore-checking teams in the league and they have been scoring from pretty much all areas lately so I should be glad the Caps were able to get a point from them. Still, the way the Caps played tonight for a good portion of this game was disgraceful and they didn’t deserve to walk away with a point in the standings. Watching them look lazy and careless game after game is very discouraging and making me more pessimistic about the playoffs, assuming we make it (Yeah, I went there).

– DJ King and Jody Shelley’s fight should have been named the battle of useless players. That fits both players descriptions well. Then again, they’re both enforcers who know their role, so…

Sorry for the pessimism folks but I don’t think I can sugarcoat the way the team has been playing any longer. It’s beyond frustrating now.
